Although associated with schizophrenia, psychosis exists to varying degrees in other mental illnesses like bipolar disorders, depression, drugs-induced, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but also in some organic physical diseases, like for example head injury.
Psychosis may happen in other diseases than schizophrenia
However, whatever is the cause, it is important to know the early signs preceding psychosis. In fact, psychosis rarely comes abruptly; the onset is usually progressive, and the early warning signs can be difficult to distinguish from teens or youth behaviors.
Warning signs appear before psychosis happens
When these warning signs appear, it is essential to be assessed by a doctor; early diagnosis and treatment of a psychotic episode will increase the chance of recovery.
Early treatment could reverse psychosis
Warning signs can be:
- A decline in self-care
- A decline in personal hygiene
- Loneliness
- Drop in school’s grades (or work’s performance)
- Concentration and thinking disturbances
- Suspicious relations to others (uncomfortable)
- Strong emotions, or at the opposite, lack of emotions
