Pets can help you staying healthy by many ways:
- Physical activity: dogs need 1-3 walks throughout the day. That you will be walking every day! Physical activity helps reduce risk for memory problems, heart problems, relieve anxiety, and helps with better sleep
- Emotional connection: you may notice you feel less lonely, or have less anxiety or sleep better with a pet nearby. Their scent, and seeing they’re smiling face can be amood booster
- Responsibility: having a routine is helpful for the brain. For people with chronic thoughts of self-harm, the responsibility of staying alive for their pet can help with getting through the fleeting negative thoughts
- Special senses: animals have specially tuned senses that can be far more powerful than ours. They can detect seizures, cancer, and other ailments in humans. They can help warn you or get help. They might be specially trained to do these things in a meaningful way, or step up to the task in unplanned ways
