Transitions are hard, they are often stressful and anxiety provoking.

Right now, many of us are facing times of transition, whether it is leaving home for the first time (for college or a new job), as an empty nester, a new home, a new school in the time of COVID.

During these transitional times, focusing on ways to be balanced can help. It will provide a basis of routine and calm.

Here are some suggestions to help create a better sense of balance in your life:

  • Sleep – Prioritize sleep. Aim for at least 8 hours. Keep in mind the quality is just as important as quantity.
  • Stress reduction – Try meditation – simply walking outside and noticing the beauty around you is calming. There are many meditation apps out there. I like calm.com, headspace. Journaling is helping too.
  • To help with anxiety, loneliness – Make a list of activities that make you happy – for example – favorite music, favorite TV show, creative outlets, etc. Have these ready available.
  • Drink plenty of water – Keep a water bottle full at all times.
  • Eat healthy – Lots of fruits and vegetables. For college students – have easy snacks on hand – nuts, granola bars. If you have a small refrigerator – fresh fruits, hummus, kombucha.
  • Get outside in nature
  • Exercise – Gyms may still be closed due to COVID – Get a jump rope, resistance bands, small foam roller. Aim to move your body most days of the week. This will help keep you and your immune system strong, as well as aid in stress reduction.
  • Calendar – Helps with planning and scheduling.
  • Declutter – The less physical clutter you have, results in less mental clutter and clarity.
  • Social Connection – Reach out to friends and family for love and support. Whether it be a phone call, text or FaceTime call. Loving connection is important.

Remember, transitions can be difficult.

Be patient with yourself. Focus on some of the above suggestions. Hopefully they will provide you with a sense of balance and calm.
