Sometimes social media can get overwhelming and stressful. It can have a negative impact on our mental health. It’s so easy to get caught up in posts and compare ourselves to everyone we see on our timelines. Or sometimes not getting as many likes or getting negative comments can bring down our self-esteem. At the same time, we also have to be mindful of what we are putting out there for the world to see. Our friends and family will all see our posts and comments, along with future employers and other professionals. Here are some tips to having a healthy relationship with social media:
1- Follow People and Things That Bring You Joy
- Delete anyone who’s post bring you down in any way
- Follow more friends and positive people
- Try following pages that post daily quotes or affirmations
- Maybe some local food blogs that can help you find new places to explore
2- Think Before You Post
- Before you post a comment on someone’s picture ask yourself, “if this was being said about me, how would I feel?” If the answer is positive and then post that comment. Otherwise, just keep it to yourself. You never know how it can affect the person on the receiving end
- Be vary of what posts you are putting up. As soon as you upload it, it’ll be on the internet forever
3- Stop Comparing
- Instead of comparing yourself to other people on your timeline, try and turn it into something positive. “If they can do it so can I.” “I am so proud of my friend for achieving their goal.”
4- Put Your Mental Health First And Take A Break
- If you feel yourself getting lost in social media every night and feeling very attached to your apps, try taking a break. A little hiatus from social media is something we all need once in a while. Take that time to enjoy the real the real world
