It’s important to talk about this topic without sensationalizing it

As a Psychiatrist, I hope to see a greater awareness of society on how these thoughts can occur for anyone. And rather than trying to avoid talking about it, to ask their loved ones suffering from mental health issues how they can help them get treatment for the thoughts.

Asking your loved one if they are having these thoughts can save their life

  • Remember you are coming from a place of love and a desire to help
  • Resist the temptation to make them feel guilty about these thoughts or to make them feel selfish (They are already feeling these emotions and it is a part of their struggle.)
  • Reassure them, gently, to use healthy coping skills that help them reduce these thoughts like exercise, meditation, distraction, relaxation techniques, etc.
  • If they are having a plan how to do it, or have taken actions to carry it through (like stock piling pills or bought a gun), it’s important to get them to an emergency evaluation at an Emergency Room (ER) or Crisis Center so they can be in s safe place
  • (Always remove firearms from their access.)
  • Treatment often includes treating the underlying depression, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), Bipolar Disorder, hallucinations or delusions. It can include medications or talk therapy or both
  • Treatment in the beginning may include time in the ER or Psychiatric Hospital fro safety and initiation of treatment and making sure a safe environment and support system is in place

*Never stop, start or change your treatment plan without talking to your personal doctor first or the doctor evaluating you during emergency services. Do not delay seeking medical attention!

LAMSA’s note: The Beirut Blast, an important physical and psychological traumatic event to the well-being of all Lebanese people, might increase the prevalence of mental illness and suicide.
