It could be your friend. Or someone who sits beside you in class. Or a family member. It can be as obvious as talking about wanting to die or about the worthlessness of life, or it can be hidden behind a big smile.
If you have serious doubts about someone being suicidal
First, ask: “Do you have suicidal thoughts?” or “Did you ever think of killing yourself?”
Don’t worry about putting the idea in their head or triggering any suicidal action, IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT EFFECT.
- If this person is suicidal right now, you should either take him/her to the hospital emergency, or make sure his/her parents or someone else does (a person who can be responsible for him/her).
- If this person isn’t at immediate risk of suicide, check if he/she is taking a treatment or if he/she has a mental health professional who’s helping him/her. They should be made aware of that.
- If the person is not getting professional help, he/she should reach out to either a psychologist or a psychiatrist. They will know what to do.
In any case, DON’T KEEP IT TO YOURSELF, and do something about it.
YOU MIGHT SAVE A LIFE.
