I may be more sensitive to the campaign Stop Stigmatizing Mental Health, as I’m married to a psychiatrist. Thanks Dr Rand Diab for asking me to participate.
Why don’t we stigmatize people with hypertension, diabetes, cancer or asthma? It may be because we see these as an acceptable illnesses. What are your thoughts when you hear that someone suffers from Anxiety, PTSD*, Depression, Schizophrenia, Phobias, Mania, Addiction, Eating Disorders, Mood Disorders, ADHD**, Personality Disorders?
Do you immediately judge them or draw conclusions?
We often disparage that which we do not understand!
The same way there is science behind physical illness, there is science behind mental illness
Many people in the world suffer in silence because of the associated stigma. And many go untreated because of the stigma and fear of being ostracized or fear of losing their jobs.
Let’s stop the stigma and judgement and allow people to get the help they need
Make a habit by asking your friends and family how they are really doing.
Let’s break the silence
Seek a psychiatrist or licensed therapist if you are in need of help.
*Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
**Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
